Board member Maryanne Van Aken requested the district’s social workers be brought back up to full time. Presently, there is one social worker in each school for four days a week, Superintendent Jody Goeler told Patch. His requested budget called for making one of those social workers full time.

March was National Social Workers Month, and before the month ended St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center took the time to thank and honor its social workers. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Weaving Threads of Resilience and Advocacy,”
CWRU receives $8 million for Mandel School

Most of the money will help support a capital campaign for the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, one of the nation’s leading schools for social work. About $3 million will be used to endow a chair for the dean of the school and pay for related programs.
Veteran social worker reappointed

Dan Powers, a veteran Dallas-area social worker, has been reappointed to the governing board of the Office of Violent Sex Offender Management. That office oversees the state’s sex offender civil commitment program. He was reappointed by Gov. Rick Perry to serve on the board through Feb. 1, 2015. Powers is the board’s presiding officer and will continue in that capacity.
Room named for Giffords aide Gabe Zimmerman set for dedication

A Capitol Hill conference room named for an aide to former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) who was killed in a January 2011 shooting will be formally dedicated next week and the former lawmaker is expected to attend the ceremony, organizers said.
Suicide cluster concerns community; meeting to take place Thursday

Gov. Eddie Calvo, on Dec. 10 2012, signed Public Law 31-250, the Guam Social Work Practice Act, a social policy legislation, which will provide social work licensure on Guam. This was a great example of advocacy for sound social work policies!
